OMG the funniest Miss Sri Lanka ever on YouTube! Or is it?

This girl has been the laughing stock of Srilanka for the past couple of days, thanks to the YouTube video that's being circulated on Facebook and what not. So here's what I think but this is just my opinion so just read it and toss it over yr shoulder :)

The video is hilarious! Me and my colleagues laughed till we cried. But hers wasn't the only funny video. Miss USA thought 'oh wim oh weh - oh wim oh weh' was the sound of a lion.. What? oh yeah lol. Then Miss China thought 'Pong! Tush!' was the sound of a rocket. And mind you, many of those rockets literary blew up as they went up haha! Oh and Miss France thought that rockets do a "count up" and she goes "un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq..." - that's like 1,2,3,4,5; instead of a count down haha how funny is that? :D

But then again, they must be nervous right? And the differences in the answers give us a nice little cross section of the world communities and how they comprehend certain ideas is pretty interesting. I actually thought the sound effects were a brilliant idea later on, after watching about 10 or 15 contestants. Just randomly watch a few of those videos and you'll think so too.

Finally, this girl has all the right to contest and you can't blame people for passing this video around and laughing at her expense because it's actually very funny! So whose fault is it?? The judges! And not only the ones in Srilanka, but going by these videos, in many other countries too. Hopefully the so called organizers of this event and other events like this should learn a darn good lesson. THEY are the laughing stock of the country.. no worse.. Universe. People must be saying.. what the heck were they thinking???? Yeah, what the heck were you thinking 'judges'?

Alright then, what if she WAS the best out of the whole lot? Then let me ask you this. How come girls with better looks or personality or both don't contest? Take a wild guess.. That surely must say something about the standard of these contests, at least in local level and also about the way our society look at girls who go for these. In general, there are people who either are not qualified enough (in this case, the beauty and brains department) to contest OR will not, because they don't have the guts to.. But are waiting to see who does, and slander them. And in a country where. when a pretty girl who is highlighted in media gets married, people are gathering to ask who's the idiot who married her and she's a like this and that.. do you think an unassuming girl who contest for Miss Srilanka stands a chance?

  2. i don't think it's right for people to judge her by that. the people who adjudged her as miss Sri Lanka, to represent us at the miss universe pageant are the ones who should be getting the stick for this

  3. I feel sorry for her, she was there representing her country. The selectors should be blamed instead, shame on them !! :)

  4. @Purple & @Kiribath -
Yes, indeed. Although the video is funny and people can't help but laugh, the fault lies not with her, but the selection committee or the judges. And don't forget that it's not only her video that's funny :)

    @Anonymous -
In local schools, kids are taught that the cow goes "Umbaaa" instead of "Moooo" so can you really blame her, yeah?

  5. Spot on with your perception on how our society perceives these events. I think thats whats fundamentally wrong here. If more of us thought positive and respect the fact about participating in such events, we would have more competitive contestants at a local level.

  6. @blog - hmmm.. Pity your link doesn't work. If you're a blogger, I'd love to read yours.

Anyways, I think that most local competitions lack 'professionalism' or at least 'class'. Which is why people with real talent don't even bother participating, leave alone winning. Someone or something should change somewhere. This video would at least be an eye-opener? I hope..

  7. @indulekha Sorry about that, for some reason that happens when I comment on blogger posts. My word-press doesn't seem to like it :) However I really doubt you would enjoy reading my blog but do give it a shot.

I really do hope so too.

  8. My only opinion about this video is - where is the coach?

When a person or a team represent a country there is always a coach. That is not because they lack talent but because they lack experience. Un-coached talent is a waste specially in an events like this where millions of people pay attention.

  9. @Muditha - Totally agree with you. That's one side of it that I forgot to mention. Thanks for pointing it out :) I remember I read on someone else's blog last week that other girls sounded "coached" and that at least Miss Srilanka sounded genuine.. Like.. hello?? :P

@Hiraash - well there's only one way to find out :D

  10. I am one of those people who is guilty in posting this on my facebook. Though I did not insult her, my friends ripped her apart and I felt bad about it. Even in that case my comment was the above. I have watched few programs about how Donald Trump conduct these shows and usually all these contestants have coaches but in this case I wonder if there was one.
I also think (here I am generalizing) girls like these are usually very difficult. Probably would not have listen to even a coach. I will stop at that as I don't know her personally.

  11. seriously, the selection committee has no better questions to ask than ask the contestants to make random noises? is this even real? i know very little of the Miss Universe pageant, but if this is the case, very very lame.

issue of language is a whole different matter. Agree with almost everyone else who commented.

  12. This is seriously embarrassing!!! why was she even out there??? I see no logic of her representing us as a country or even a model!!! either she bribed the selection panel or they have a really bad taste at... well, all most anything under sun judging by there ridiculous choice.... sigh...
