"Power failure in sevaral parts of the country at the moment. Steps are being taken to rectify it soon-CEB-Daily Mirror"
And few minutes later :
"Electricity disrupted in many parts of the island due to tripping of the main transmission line from Kotmale to Biyagama - Chariman CEB"
After a while.. my friends on Twitter started reporting they got electricity back.. one by one. And @YasirNasir put out this interesting 'theory' that :
"Ah, you're further away from Colombo, that's why. Usually power comes back inside Colombo first."
And that...
"My theory was CMB usually is on the top of restoration list, doesn't mean other areas don't get power back. :P"
I almost bought it until... @Isharajay in Gampaha reported that he got power back before @Moshanthi and @CocoVeranda from Colombo 07 reported they got power. So I thought I'd do a bit of digging in..
Interestingly enough.. Searching through my twitter timeline, this is how the Tweeps got their power back. So I call it the #CEBlist or the CEB priority list ;)
3.44pm - Wattala (Anudi_)
4.18pm - Colombo 5 (Yasirnasir & m_nasir13)
4.30pm - Negambo (mnhaqeel : we are not in CEB we are LECO)
4.30pm - Gampaha (Isharajay & Chathuraw)
4.30pm to 5.00pm - Moratuwa (Supems : Took 30 min to increase to 230V from 0V. 7.67V per 1s)
4.33pm - Colombo 3 (Shamil_Jay)
4.34pm - Colombo 3 (Milindat)
4.40pm - Colombo 7 (Cocoveranda)
4.45pm - Colombo 7 (Moshanthi)
4.45pm - Colombo 4 (Bhagyas)
4.45pm - Old Kottawa Road, off Nugegoda (Me!)
4.59pm - Dehiwala (Saleemmutaliph)
4.59pm - Dehiwala (Rushda_)
5.00pm - Dehiwala (Gihangamos)
5.00pm - Nugegoda (Amisampath)
5.00pm - Pilimathalawa, Kandy (deeps) - she said "around" 5 though..
5.05pm - Anuradhapura (Udaraumd)
5.10pm - Athurugiriya (Arvindjkv)
5.10pm - Battaramulla (e4c5)
5.10pm - Kottawa (via D-man)
5.25pm - 8km off Ambalangoda (kpgtharaka)
5.45pm - 10km off Kandy town(Malinthe)
5.55pm - Kurunegala (malindaprasad)
8.20pm - Hakmana (Budhajeewa)
Funnily.. 4.20pm - Awissawella LOST power (OshanRube)
And in view of fast approaching Christmas... we named it the "CEB naughty and nice list"!
So what do you guys think? Does CEB have a priority "list" or do we get power restored in random fashion? Oh.. and.. It would be really cool if you can check your timeline and tell me (post as a comment) what time you and your tweeps got power back, so I can expand the list. Then we can all see the "bigger picture" :D
UPDATE : So the Daily Mirror reports the CEB Chirman Vidya Amarapala had said this, regarding the power failure :
A major blackout in many parts of the country occurred today due to the tripping of Kotmale and Biyagama transmission line. The grid was tripped due to lighting which created instability in the grid. The Chairman added that the power had to be restored section by section and that the CEB was energizing these sections currently.
Good attempt there Indu! :)
ReplyDeleteLOL!! Didn't know where to write it all down to display in one place.. and then I remembered ah! I do have a blog! hehehe :P

ReplyDelete@Kiribath - We might as well ask the Hon. minister huh? ;)
ReplyDelete@Gayan - Thanks buddy :)
@Budhajeewa - I'm gonna find if anybody in CEB care to comment hehehe
@Indulekha: I don't think those morons know a thing called "Internet" exists! :/
ReplyDeleteNice work... lol... I live in col-13 and electricity was on & off least about 4 to 5 times that I stopped looking at the time... :) Next time I shall remember the details and update you.. :)
ReplyDeleteLoL.....
@Budhajeewa - well.. there's only one way to find out huh? Let's see what I can dig out tomorrow ;)
ReplyDelete@Solivagant Soul - Electricity went on & off several times u say? Interesting. For me, it was just GONE! then back ON! You didn't tweet about it by any chance huh?
"the grid was tripped due to lighting which created instability in the grid" thought surge arrestors should have taken care of this problem. Perhaps the transmission network weak to start with..
ReplyDelete@Manoj - Yeah.. makes one wonder, isn't it ;) In theory, the grid should be able to withstand such power surges.
ReplyDeletenice attempt... I got power around 5. Didnt tweet though. im from pilimathalawa, near kandy
ReplyDelete@Deeps - Any idea if it was 'before or after' 5pm? Anyways, I just added your comment to the list :D
ReplyDeleteOMG , CEB should have appointed to the post of Disaster Recovery.
